GP & J Baker | Hydrangea Bird (archive)

Hydrangea Bird is an archive design from GP & J Baker's own print books, brought back for the Chifu collection, which the House describes as celebrating its heritage through some of its most iconic designs. Birds sit among hydrangea blooms at a genuinely large scale, a 106 by 134 centimetre repeat that runs close to the full cloth width, so the motif reads as a proper botanical study rather than a repeat pattern.

The cloth is 100 per cent linen, printed to give the birds and flowers a crisp, absorbed line. It is 134 centimetres wide, with a 106 centimetre vertical and 134 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional rather than daily-use upholstery. Five colourways: Blue, Green, Emerald/Blue, Old Rose and Teal; Blue and Teal are the cooler, most versatile options for a mixed scheme.

We use it for a pair of full-length curtains in a room with the height to show the large repeat properly, or a single-panel blind as a genuine focal point on a feature wall. Pair Old Rose with warm timber and brass, and Blue, Green or Teal with stone and cool metals. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the repeat is so large, plan the layout of each width with your curtain maker before cutting, so the birds and branches line up rather than half-repeating at the seam. Allow one full vertical repeat per drop. Line and interline curtains, since printed linen at this scale rewards the extra support and fades faster than a woven cloth left in unprotected sun.
