Ikat Bokhara translates the blurred, resist-dyed effect of traditional ikat weaving into a furnishing cloth, the soft-edged motif characteristic of yarns dyed before weaving rather than printed after. Named for the Central Asian city renowned for the technique, the pattern is set at a 69 by 26 centimetre repeat, giving it a gentle, painterly quality quite different from a crisp printed line elsewhere in the collection.

The cloth is a four-fibre blend, 49 per cent viscose, 26 per cent linen, 17 per cent cotton and 8 per cent polyester, chosen to carry the soft-edged ikat effect with good body and drape. It is 130 centimetres wide, with a 69 centimetre vertical and 26 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional rather than daily-use upholstery. Six colourways: Blue, Sand, Teal, Rose/Green, Neutral and Espresso; Sand and Neutral are the easiest to build a scheme around, Espresso the warmest and most grounding.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom or sitting room, where the soft blur of the ikat effect reads well at a distance, and it covers a chair or ottoman well where its texture holds up to closer inspection. Pair Espresso with warm timber and brass, and Blue or Teal with stone and cool metals. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 69 centimetre repeat per drop and match the pattern across widths, checking carefully at the seam since ikat's soft edges can make misalignment less obvious until the cloth is actually hung. Line and interline curtains for a well-used window. At 20,000 rubs, keep upholstery to lightly used pieces rather than a family sofa.
