GP & J Baker | Iris Meadow Cotton

Iris Meadow Cotton is part of Originals Brantwood, GP & J Baker's reissue of archive naturalist prints named for Brantwood, John Ruskin's house on Coniston Water, where wild iris meadows were among the plants he studied and drew. The design is worked at a small, neat scale, 25 by 17 centimetres, on a pure cotton ground, so it reads as a fine, even print rather than a single dominant bloom, closer to a texture than a statement floral.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 25 centimetre vertical and 17 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional-use pieces, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Three colourways: Pink/Green, Blue and Teal; Blue is the coolest and most versatile of the three, sitting equally well in a period or a plainer room.

We use it for curtains in a bedroom or garden room, where the meadow subject sits naturally, and it covers a lightly used chair or window seat well. Pair Blue or Teal with a calm, contemporary scheme, and Pink/Green where the room wants more warmth from its fabrics and finishes; the same design is also printed onto a softer viscose-linen ground as Iris Meadow. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths, since the small scale shows any drift quickly at the seams. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour from fading; at 20,000 rubs, keep upholstered pieces to lighter, occasional use rather than daily seating.
