GP & J Baker | Jogalong

Jogalong is a woven stripe from Kit Kemp's work with GP & J Baker, but a stripe with a wobble in it, because the bands step and shift rather than running dead straight. Woven in cotton with a little polyester for stability, it has a firm, even handle and enough weight for both curtains and seating. Look at it closely and you can see the drawing behind it: the bands are not ruled but stepped, as though someone had set them out by eye across the loom.

Composition is 85 per cent cotton and 15 per cent polyester, 135 centimetres wide, with a 39 centimetre vertical and 45 centimetre horizontal repeat, the vertical repeat coming from the movement in the stripe. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways: Jewel, which is the full-colour version, and Red/Ochre, which is warmer and simpler and works in a smaller room.

We use it for curtains in a hall or a landing, for loose covers on a small sofa, and for a long bench or window seat where the stripe can run the length of the cushion. It also makes good cushions cut so the stripe runs across rather than up. It is a good cloth for a room used by children, because the movement in the stripe hides a great deal. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Unlike a straight stripe this one has a vertical repeat, so it does need matching: allow 39 centimetres per drop and tell the workroom the pattern is not railroadable without the movement turning sideways. On a pair of curtains, start both drops on the same band. For a window seat, centre the widest stripe on the cushion.
