GP & J Baker | Kersloe

Kersloe is a Keswick Embroideries design with a 30 by 45 centimetre repeat, stitched in linen and polyester thread across the linen ground, giving a slightly wider than tall motif that suits a horizontal run of curtains or a pelmet. It has the same raised, tactile quality that runs through the whole collection, and because it comes in two closely related blues it is one of the more flexible designs in the range for a scheme that needs to move between rooms.

Composition is 57 per cent linen, 38 per cent polyester and 5 per cent rayon. It is 135 centimetres wide, with a 30 centimetre vertical and 45 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. Two colourways: Indigo, a deep ink blue, and Soft Blue, considerably paler; both sit in the same family, so they can be used together in one room without clashing.

We use Kersloe for curtains in a study or bedroom, choosing Indigo where the room wants weight and Soft Blue where it wants light. Using both together, curtains in one and cushions in the other, is a simple way to build a scheme without introducing a second pattern, and a run of Kersloe along a window seat base ties the two ends of a room together. Pair with a plain linen in either tone. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop and match carefully across widths, since the wider horizontal repeat shows any drift more readily than a taller one. Line and interline curtains to support the stitch. Press from the reverse over a soft cloth so the embroidery is not flattened. It is not rated for upholstery, so keep Kersloe to windows, cushions and beds rather than a chair seat.
