Kilim Stripe is the one woven design in the Portobello collection, where the rest of the range is printed: a genuine cotton and jute weave built to echo the banded structure of a kilim rug rather than a conventional stripe. The jute gives the cloth a coarser, more textured hand than anything else in Portobello, and a visible, slightly irregular weave, so it reads as much as a texture as it does a pattern.
Composition is 70 per cent cotton and 30 per cent jute, the jute giving the cloth real texture and body. It is 135 centimetres wide, with a 27 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Blue.
We use Kilim Stripe on a footstool, a window seat or an occasional chair, where the woven texture can be felt as well as seen, and equally as curtains in a room that wants a rustic, textural note. It pairs naturally with the floral prints elsewhere in Portobello, taking the role a plain would usually play, and a set of floor cushions in it suits a hallway or a garden room with a more relaxed brief. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
There is no published rub count for Kilim Stripe, so confirm current test data with your supplier before specifying hard daily-use upholstery; we would keep it to lighter or occasional-use pieces. Ask your maker to match the stripe carefully at any seam, since the jute weave shows drift more readily than a smooth cloth, and allow a little extra cloth to accommodate the natural irregularity of the weave.
