GP & J Baker | Knight's Tale

Knight's Tale is Kit Kemp's narrative design for GP & J Baker, with figures, animals and foliage drawn in the manner of a medieval hanging and printed here on viscose and linen. The 79 centimetre vertical repeat lets the story unfold down a curtain, while the 27 centimetre horizontal repeat keeps it dense enough to read as an all-over pattern rather than a set of separate pictures.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 79 centimetre vertical and 27 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Jewel, which is the fullest and strongest; Plaster, which drops the whole design to a soft warm neutral; and Sage/Blue, which keeps the drawing clear while staying cool.

We would make this up as interlined curtains in a dining room or a study, as a headboard with a plain piped edge, or as a pair of large cushions against a plain sofa. In Plaster it will even carry a small sofa. Keep the surrounding fabrics plain or woven. We would also use it for a single pair of door curtains in a hall, hung on a portiere rod, where the density of the drawing does something useful for draught and for noise. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Five horizontal repeats fall across the 137 centimetre width, so seams can be hidden between figures if the maker plans the drops as a set. Allow one 79 centimetre repeat per drop for matching and centre the design on each curtain. If you are upholstering, ask for the pattern to be centred on the inside back and the seat cut from a separate length.
