Knight's Tale Texture is the quieter half of Kit Kemp's Knight's Tale story for GP & J Baker, with the foliage and ground of the larger design lifted out and printed on its own. It is a viscose and linen cloth with a dry, slightly papery handle and a soft drape, and the print sits on the surface rather than sinking into it, so the drawing stays crisp.
Composition is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, woven 137 centimetres wide, with an 81 centimetre vertical and 27 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Fuchsia, Cocoa and Spring Green. Fuchsia is the one to use in small quantities, Cocoa is the easiest to live with across a whole window, and Spring Green sits well against natural wood.
We would make this up as full-length curtains in a bedroom, as a headboard with a plain flat border, or as the inside of a pair of cushions whose fronts are the main Knight's Tale print. It also works on a small occasional chair. Against it, keep the other fabrics to plain weaves. Used with the full Knight's Tale print in the same colourway it gives you two weights of the same idea, which is usually more useful than a plain in a room that needs pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The horizontal repeat is 27 centimetres, so on a 137 centimetre width you get five clean pattern repeats across the cloth and joins fall easily. For curtains, add one vertical repeat per drop to the cut length and match at the leading edge. Viscose-rich cloths take up moisture, so let the made-up curtains hang for a week before the final hem is levelled.
