Knight's Tale is Kit Kemp's storytelling design for GP & J Baker, with figures, beasts and foliage drawn by hand and set into a large repeat that rolls up the wall like a tapestry. At 104 centimetres the repeat is long enough that you rarely see the same passage twice in a normal ceiling height, which is what gives it the feel of a single drawn scene rather than a pattern.
It is a 100 per cent non-woven paper, 70 centimetres wide, with a 104 centimetre vertical repeat. Six colourways: Jewel, Cocoa, Spring Green, Fuchsia, Plaster and Sage/Blue. Jewel and Fuchsia are the loud ones and want a room that can carry them; Cocoa gives the design an old, warm cast; Plaster and Sage/Blue keep the drawing legible while staying pale enough to live with every day.
We would put this in a dining room, on a single chimney wall in a sitting room, or across a small hall where you want one surface to do all the work. Hang plain curtains against it and keep the upholstery to weaves and textures, because the paper is already carrying the narrative. In a room with a picture rail we would stop the paper at the rail and paint above it, which keeps the scale of the design in proportion to the room. Paste the wall rather than the paper. A 104 centimetre repeat means each drop has to start at the same point in the design, so allow a full extra repeat on every length: at a 2.5 metre ceiling that gives three drops from a 10 metre roll, and a 4 metre wall takes two. Order one batch for the whole room and hang the drops in roll order.
