GP & J Baker | Lamorna Embroidery

Lamorna Embroidery is named for the Cornish valley, and unlike the woven textures elsewhere in Artisan II it is a genuine stitched pattern on a linen-viscose ground, worked at a 58 by 68 centimetre scale. The raised thread gives it the same tactile, light-catching quality as the Keswick embroideries, in a single tone that reads as texture from across the room, and being tonal rather than two-coloured it is an easier embroidery than most to introduce into a scheme that already has pattern elsewhere.

Composition is 65 per cent linen and 35 per cent viscose, the viscose largely in the embroidery thread. It is 136 centimetres wide, with a 58 centimetre vertical and 68 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, named simply Linen, a pale, natural flax tone stitched in a slightly deeper shade of the same colour.

We use Lamorna for curtains in a room that wants texture without introducing a new colour, since the tonal stitching sits so close to the ground shade. It also makes an elegant bedspread or a set of cushions on a plain sofa, and a single width used as a headboard panel gives a plain bed real quiet texture. Pair it with a stronger plain in blue or green to give the room some contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full repeat per drop and match across widths so the stitching runs continuously. Line and interline curtains to support the raised thread and protect it from strong sun; press from the reverse over a soft cloth. It is not rated for upholstery, so keep it to windows, beds and cushions, and ask your maker to check the tonal match carefully since a slight shade shift is harder to see against a matching ground.
