GP & J Baker | Lansdowne

Lansdowne is a two-colour woven design that steps across the cloth every 5 centimetres and barely moves up it, so it behaves like a wide, soft ticking rather than a check. The cotton majority gives it a crisp, dry face and a firm handle, and because the colour is in the weave rather than on it the pattern stays even when the cloth is pulled over a frame.

It is 54 per cent cotton, 22 per cent viscose, 14 per cent polyester and 10 per cent linen, woven 134 centimetres wide with a 2 centimetre vertical and 5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and tested to 27,000 Martindale rubs, which covers curtains, loose covers, light fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Green/Red is the colourway, a soft sage worked against a faded brick, warmer than the two names suggest.

We would use Lansdowne on a small sofa in a garden room, on dining chair seats, or as curtains in a bedroom with plain painted walls. It takes a plain green or a stone linen alongside it, and it looks right with rush matting, painted furniture and old oak. A pair of cushions in it lifts a plain sofa without introducing a second pattern. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

At 134 centimetres this is the narrowest cloth in the collection, so check your drop widths before ordering; a curtain that needs one and a half widths on a 140 centimetre cloth may need two here. Match the horizontal step across seams and keep the design running the same way on every panel. Cotton-rich cloth will shrink slightly if it is ever washed, so specify dry cleaning for loose covers.
