GP & J Baker | Lapura Damask

Lapura Damask is a woven jacquard from the Coromandel collection, its all-over pattern raised tone-on-tone in the weave rather than printed onto the surface, so the design shows through light and shadow as the cloth catches the light through the day. At 59 by 68.5 centimetres the repeat is generous enough to read clearly across a curtain or a chair back.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, the viscose giving the jacquard weave a soft lustre where the raised pattern catches light differently from the flatter ground. It is 137 centimetres wide, with a 59 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 9,000 Wyzenbeek rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional upholstery rather than the heaviest daily use. Three colourways: Blue, Ochre and Dove; Dove is the quietest neutral, Blue the most versatile.

We use it for curtains in a formal sitting room or bedroom, where the tonal weave catches changing light through the day, and it covers a chair seat or headboard well at a smaller, closer scale. Allow a full 59 centimetre repeat per drop and match the weave across widths so the pattern continues cleanly at the seams. Line and interline curtains for a well-used window, since the added body helps the jacquard hang with real weight.
