GP & J Baker | Lapura Velvet

Lapura Velvet takes the same tonal pattern as Lapura Damask and renders it as a cut velvet, so the same 59 centimetre vertical repeat now reads through pile and ground rather than through woven light and shadow. The effect is richer and more textured, the sort of velvet that rewards being seen at close range as well as across a room, and the two make a natural pairing in one scheme.

The cloth is 56 per cent cotton and 44 per cent linen, a firmer blend than the collection's viscose-rich velvets elsewhere, giving the pile a slightly crisper hand. It is 132 centimetres wide, with a 59 centimetre vertical and 33 centimetre horizontal repeat, and no rub count is stated, so we would treat it as suited to curtains and occasional rather than daily-use upholstery. Four colourways: Blue, Indian Red, Emerald and Mole; Mole is the easiest neutral to place, Indian Red the most decisive choice.

We use it for a single armchair or a pair of cushions where the tonal pattern and the pile can both be appreciated, and it makes rich curtains in a room with the height for a full repeat to show properly and settle. Pair Mole with warm timber, and Indian Red or Emerald with darker woodwork and cream. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 59 centimetre repeat per drop and keep pile direction consistent across all pieces before cutting begins. Have curtains steamed rather than pressed to keep the pile standing properly. As no rub count is given, keep upholstery to lightly used pieces until you have confirmed suitability with the mill directly.
