Lavenham is a generous, open botanical from the Ashmore collection, its branching stems and flowerheads set out over a large 78 by 63.5 centimetre repeat so the design unfolds slowly across a width of curtain rather than repeating in an obvious grid. The linen-rayon ground gives the print a soft, slightly lustrous surface that catches the light differently to a pure linen.
The composition is 86 per cent linen and 14 per cent rayon, and it is 127 centimetres wide with a 78 centimetre vertical and 63.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and bedspreads. Three colourways: Blue, Rose and Antique. Blue is the coolest and most contemporary; Rose brings warmth to a bedroom; Antique is the most subdued of the three, reading as a soft, aged neutral.
We use it for full-length curtains in a drawing room or a principal bedroom, where the large repeat has room to breathe, and it makes a handsome bedspread with the pattern centred on the mattress. A single cushion in Rose or Blue is enough to bring the print into a room without a full set of curtains. Pair with a plain linen in the same colourway or a small geometric for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
With a 78 centimetre repeat, order generously and allow a full repeat per drop so the pattern is not cut awkwardly at the hem. Line and interline curtains, and match carefully across widths so the branching stems continue unbroken. It is not specified for upholstery, so keep it to windows, beds and cushions, and centre the motif deliberately on a bedspread.
