GP & J Baker | Laverton Stripe

Laverton Stripe is a plain-woven cotton-linen stripe from the House Plain & Stripe II range, its 7 centimetre repeat giving a firm, even band that reads as tailored rather than casual. Woven rather than printed, the stripe has a slight ridge you can feel as well as see, and the wide colour run makes it one of the more flexible stripes in the house range, at home in a formal room as much as a country one.

The cloth is 55 per cent cotton and 45 per cent linen, and it is 137 centimetres wide with a 7 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and bedspreads. Ten colourways: Linen, Oatmeal, Nutmeg, Soft Red, Soft Blue, Denim, Indigo, Aqua, Grass and Ochre, a full run from pale neutrals through warm reds and cool blues to one green and one yellow, so there is a shade for almost any wall colour.

We use it for curtains in a hallway or a study, where a stripe gives a room some order, and it makes a crisp, tailored bedspread. A run of it on a window seat cushion is an easy way to bring the stripe into a room without curtains, and it looks equally at home behind a bed as a headboard panel. Pair with a house plain in a matching tone, or one of the Ashmore florals for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Keep the stripe level and match the repeat at every seam, and allow extra if you are railroading it for a pelmet or a wide blind. Line curtains, and interline in a room with strong light so the colour does not fade unevenly. It is not specified for upholstery, so keep it to windows, beds and cushions.
