Lea is a plain, 100 per cent linen cloth in the Crayford family, its name an old English word for a meadow or a stretch of open grassland, fitting for a plain green linen. It shares the tightly woven, matt hand of the house's other Crayford plains, Newport and Weekend Linen, and works as their quieter, more colourful companion within the same book.
The composition is 100 per cent linen, and the cloth is 137 centimetres wide; no repeat is stated, since a plain has none to give. GP & J Baker tested it to 35,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery, and specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There are two colourways, Leaf, a true grass green, and 840, a numbered shade the page does not otherwise name or describe.
We would use Leaf on a sofa or a pair of curtains in a scheme that wants a confident, garden-toned green without introducing a print, and it pairs naturally with any of the house's botanical prints in a similar palette elsewhere in the room. Order a sample of 840 to see its actual colour before specifying it, since the code alone gives no indication of the finished shade. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
As a plain with no repeat, cutting and matching are straightforward; railroad a wide sofa run where possible to avoid a seam across the main panel and keep the surface reading as one continuous piece. Line curtains as standard, and note that pure linen will crease more readily than a blended cloth, which is part of its character rather than a fault.
