GP & J Baker | Lillington

Lillington is another of the six new Keswick Embroideries, worked as a fine stitched pattern across a linen-cotton-viscose ground. The repeat is among the largest in this group of designs, at 76 by 64 centimetres, which gives it a generous, unhurried scale that suits a proper length of curtain rather than a small window. As with the rest of the Keswick range, the interest lies in the raised thread itself rather than a printed motif, so the pattern reads differently depending on where the light is coming from.

Composition is 40 per cent linen, 30 per cent cotton and 30 per cent viscose. It is 128 centimetres wide, with a 76 centimetre vertical and 64 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. Two colourways: Blush, a gentle warm pink, and Soft Blue, a cooler, powdery tone; both are quiet enough to use widely rather than as an accent alone.

We use Lillington for full-length curtains in a bedroom, where the generous repeat has room to read properly, and Blush in particular suits a room that wants warmth without being overtly floral. It also makes a good bedspread panel, and a single length stretched over a headboard gives a plain bed real presence. Pair it with a plain linen in the same tone or a small geometric weave. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With a 76 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop when calculating quantities, and plan the layout so the motif sits well at the leading edge rather than being cut awkwardly. Line and interline curtains to support the stitch and protect it from sun. It is not rated for upholstery, so keep this one to windows, beds and cushions, and press from the reverse over a soft cloth so the stitch is not flattened.
