GP & J Baker | Marmora

Marmora is named for the Sea of Marmara, and it is the finest-grained of the East to West group: a small, dense woven texture in cotton, polyester, viscose and a touch of linen, with an 11 by 11 centimetre repeat that reads almost as a plain from across a room. It is the design to reach for when you want the warmth of a woven colour without any visible pattern at all, and it is the coolest-toned of the five East to West weaves, which makes it a useful foil for the warmer spice and teal tones elsewhere in the collection.

Composition is 57 per cent cotton, 37 per cent polyester, 4 per cent viscose and 2 per cent linen. It is 121 centimetres wide, with an 11 centimetre repeat both vertically and horizontally, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Quartz, a cool pale grey with a faint sheen that reads almost stone-coloured in daylight and softer by lamplight.

We use Marmora as a quiet curtain fabric in a room where the walls or the furniture are already doing the talking, and it is a useful blind fabric for the same reason: the fine repeat lies flat and even when folded into pleats. It pairs naturally with warmer neutrals and with timber, which stop the grey reading cold, and it sits well behind a stronger pattern used on cushions or a chair, letting that pattern carry the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With such a small repeat there is very little pattern wastage; standard drop calculations are enough without adding a full extra repeat. There is no published rub count, so we specify Marmora for curtains and blinds rather than upholstery. Line curtains fully; the pale, cool colourway shows a poorly lined edge more than a warmer tone would, and a good interlining will help it hang with a little more body.
