GP & J Baker | Meadow Fruit Velvet

Meadow Fruit Velvet is the cotton velvet companion to Meadow Fruit, taking the same fruit-and-foliage motif from GP & J Baker's Originals V archive and setting it on a plush pile ground rather than a flat print. The 23 centimetre repeat is compact enough to read as a rich, all-over texture from across a room, with the velvet giving the fruit and leaf motifs a softer, more absorbed edge than the printed linen-viscose version.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton and 137 centimetres wide, with a 23 centimetre vertical repeat. It is rated at a substantial 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Cinder/Multi, a dark, smoky ground that carries flecks of the fruit's own colours through the design.

We use it for a chair or a section of a sofa where a plush, patterned velvet can anchor a room, and for curtains in a scheme with enough plain elsewhere to support a dark, richly coloured cloth. It pairs naturally with Meadow Fruit itself on a cushion or a lighter chair, giving the same archive design in two different weights and finishes. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the pile and colour together in your own light.

Allow one full repeat per drop; the compact repeat makes matching straightforward compared with a larger-scale print. For upholstery, ask your maker about railroading on a wide sofa and about pile direction, since a printed velvet should be cut with the pile running consistently. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron it.
