Moreton Trellis is a small-scale printed trellis from GP & J Baker's Signature Prints, the collection that reissues archive designs in updated colours. The trellis is drawn as a soft, hand-cut lattice rather than a hard geometric, and at 25 by 19 centimetres it works as a texture from a distance and a pattern close to. It is the workhorse of the collection, the design you put on the chair when the curtains are birds.
The cloth is a mixed-fibre print: 49 per cent viscose, 26 per cent linen, 17 per cent cotton and 8 per cent polyester, which gives a smooth, slightly lustrous face with the drape of viscose and the body of linen. It is 134 centimetres wide with a 25 centimetre vertical and 19 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker rate it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Two colourways, Stone and Spice: Stone is a soft neutral that disappears into a scheme, Spice a warm terracotta that lifts one.
We use it on small upholstered pieces, a bedroom chair, a stool, a set of dining chair seats, and on roman blinds in rooms where the main curtain fabric is a large print. It is also good for a fitted bedspread or a valance. Pair it with Oriental Bird or Rockbird from the same collection, or with a plain linen. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
For upholstery, ask your upholsterer to centre the trellis on the seat and keep it square to the frame; a small repeat shows any twist. For curtains, lining is essential and interlining preferable. Allow one repeat per drop. Dry clean only.
