GP & J Baker | Morley

Morley is the crispest of the textures in the Baker House Textures range, a fine, even weave with a 1.5 centimetre repeat in both directions that reads as a close, granular surface rather than a smooth plain. The higher cotton content gives it more structure than its sisters in the range, which is part of why it carries the highest rub count of the group.

The composition is 55 per cent cotton, 24 per cent viscose, 11 per cent linen, 7 per cent acrylic and 3 per cent polyester, 142 centimetres wide, and rated at 45,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Sand, Tomato, Teal, Blue and Indigo, a tight, useful run from one warm neutral through to three cool, saturated options.

We reach for it on a sofa or a set of dining chairs in daily use, where the crisp weave and high rub count matter more than they would on an occasional piece, and it wears well under children and pets. Teal or Indigo carry a room on their own; Sand is the quiet option for a large piece of furniture. Pair with an Ashmore print on a cushion or a blind for contrast. The tight, even repeat needs no matching across widths, so cutting is efficient. Line and interline curtains for weight. For upholstery, railroad where the piece allows it and check the batch reference before ordering a large run, since Morley is dyed to a fixed shade rather than made to order.
