GP & J Baker | Morton

Morton is a fine textured weave from GP & J Baker's Burford Weaves II collection, built on a small 4 by 3.5 centimetre structure that reads as a close, even grain. With viscose making up most of the blend the cloth has a soft handle and a gentle sheen that shifts as you move past it, while the cotton and linen keep it from feeling slippery. Cloths with a small structure like this are far more forgiving than flat plains on upholstery, because the grain breaks up the light and hides the small marks a plain would show.

Composition is 64 per cent viscose, 14 per cent cotton, 12 per cent polyester and 10 per cent linen, woven 137 centimetres wide, with a 4 centimetre vertical and 3.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 35,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Six colourways: Parchment, Coral, Blue, Indigo, Green and Ochre. Parchment is the neutral; Indigo and Green are the deepest; Coral and Ochre are the warm end.

We use this for upholstery where a plain would be too severe, on a buttoned back, a curved chair, a fitted window seat, and for curtains that need to hold a soft fold. It is also a good cloth for a headboard, where the small structure shows up well under a lamp. It is a good choice for a bedroom chair. The repeat is small enough to ignore in practice, so cutting waste is minimal and seams can be placed anywhere. The cloth railroads well for wide pieces. Viscose-rich weaves mark if they are pressed too hot, so keep the iron off the face entirely and ask the upholsterer to work it over a cotton interlayer rather than directly onto foam.
