New Bradbourne is a small, all-over floral from the Ashmore collection: delicate blooms and foliage painted in a loose hand and printed at a friendly 19 by 18.5 centimetre repeat, so the pattern sits close and even across the cloth. It is a quieter design than the collection's larger florals, closer to a texture than a statement print, and it works as happily on its own as it does behind a bolder pattern.
The composition is 70 per cent linen, 26 per cent viscose and 4 per cent polyester, giving a dry linen hand with a little more depth of colour than a pure linen print. It is 130 centimetres wide with a 19 centimetre vertical and 18.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and bedspreads. Six colourways: Ivory, Linen, Coral, Blush, Pale Aqua and Green. Ivory and Linen are the softest for a bedroom; Coral is the one that gives a room warmth.
We would use it for curtains in a bedroom or a small sitting room, where the close repeat keeps the pattern calm rather than busy, and it makes an easy, unfussy bedspread. A pair of cushions in Coral or Green is a simple way to carry the print into a room without curtains. The small repeat wastes very little cloth: allow around 20 centimetres per drop when calculating quantities. Line curtains, and interline in a room that gets strong sun so the print does not fade unevenly. It is not specified for upholstery, so keep it to windows, beds and cushions, and match carefully across widths on a bedspread so the pattern reads as continuous.
