GP & J Baker | Orientaltrail

Orientaltrail is the chinoiserie in the Winslow collection: a trailing embroidery of peonies and foliage drawn in the manner of Chinese export textiles and worked in two colours across a linen-cotton ground. The horizontal repeat spans the full 130 centimetre width, so the trail wanders across the cloth rather than stacking, and the effect at a window is of a single continuous drawing rather than a repeat.

The composition is 38 per cent linen, 37 per cent cotton and 25 per cent viscose embroidery thread. It is 130 centimetres wide with a 38 centimetre vertical repeat and a horizontal repeat of the full width, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. One colourway, Teal/Red, a blue-green and a soft red on natural; it is a classic pairing that suits a drawing room or a dining room as well as a bedroom.

We use it for curtains in a sitting room, where the trail can be read across a pair, and for a bedspread. It makes a striking headboard, and a single cushion on a plain chair carries the colours around a room. Pair with a plain velvet in teal and a small stitched geometric such as Pavilion. It is also one of the few embroideries in the collection that can carry a formal room on its own. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Because the horizontal repeat is the full width, seams between widths should be matched so the trail continues; ask your maker to lay out the widths before cutting. Allow one vertical repeat per drop. Line and interline, and press from the reverse. It is not rated for upholstery. For a headboard, centre the boldest part of the trail and let it run off the edges.
