GP & J Baker | Palace Tapestry

Palace Tapestry is the verdure design in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's wallpaper collection drawn from the archive of patterns made for royal residences. Foliage, trees and open ground are printed in tonal layers so the wall takes on the depth of a woven hanging rather than the flatness of a print. The repeat is 76.5 centimetres vertically, which is generous: the design develops properly over a wall height without becoming a mural, and it will still turn a corner sensibly.

Printed on a 100 per cent non-woven ground, 70 centimetres wide, with a 76.5 centimetre vertical repeat. The extra width is worth having, because it means fewer joints across a wall. Three colourways: Royal Green, Royal Blue and Antique. Royal Green is the traditional tapestry colouring. Royal Blue is cooler and works where the room has a lot of northern light. Antique is softened and sepia-toned, and it is the one we use in rooms that already hold dark timber or gilt frames.

We would paper a dining room in this, or a small library, or the walls above panelling in a hall. It also suits a bedroom if the colourway is Antique and the curtains are plain. Do not put pictures on it. Let the paper be the picture and keep everything else, including the ceiling and the woodwork, in one quiet colour. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.

Paste the wall and hang the lengths dry, sliding each one to the match. Allow a full 76.5 centimetre repeat per drop and budget for the waste. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high takes six drops at this width, which is three rolls if the roll runs the usual 10 metres. Order all rolls in one batch and hang them in roll order so any small colour shift is gradual.
