Palace Weave is a plain-woven texture from the Royal Weaves group, developed alongside GP & J Baker's Historic Royal Palaces collaboration as a companion cloth to the collection's more decorated prints and damasks. With no repeat to match, it behaves as a genuine plain, built to sit quietly behind a stronger pattern. Every collaboration collection needs plains of this kind, and Palace Weave is the one we reach for most often across the Historic Royal Palaces range.

The composition is 45 per cent viscose, 35 per cent cotton, 16 per cent linen and 4 per cent polyester. It is 137 centimetres wide with no stated repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 26,000 Martindale rubs, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. There is one colourway, Sapphire, a deep, true blue that reads as formal rather than playful.

We use it for curtains in a formal room, and for upholstery on an occasional chair or a footstool rather than a piece in constant daily use, since 26,000 rubs is a moderate figure. Pair it with Cardinal Stripe or Wolsey from the same collaboration, or with a plain linen in a paler blue, keeping the room's stronger pattern to one surface only. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, cutting is simple and wastage low. Line curtains for a good fall; for upholstery, keep Palace Weave to lightly used pieces, and check the dye lot across a larger order, as is standard practice with any plain weave, so panels match exactly across a piece of furniture and between rooms if you specify it more than once in the same house.
