Paulton is built on recycled yarn, 41 per cent recycled cotton and 32 per cent recycled viscose, and the reclaimed fibre shows in the surface as a fine variation of tone that no new yarn quite reproduces. The woven figure repeats every 7 centimetres up the cloth and 6 across, small enough to read as a rich texture and large enough to be seen for what it is when you are close to it.

The blend is 41 per cent recycled cotton, 32 per cent recycled viscose, 16 per cent linen and 11 per cent polyester, woven 136 centimetres wide and tested to 28,000 rubs on the Martindale scale, which the supplier rates for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Green/Blue is the colourway, a soft sage worked with a muted blue, the two settling into a single greyed tone at any distance.

We would use Paulton on an armchair or a small sofa, on a window seat, or as curtains in a garden room or a study. It is a good cloth to specify where a client cares about where the fibre came from, and it sits naturally with oak, rush, linen and unglazed pottery. Keep the rest of the scheme plain and let the texture carry it. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Match the 7 centimetre repeat across seams and add one repeat per drop for curtains. Because recycled yarn varies a little more between batches than virgin yarn, order the full quantity in one go and ask for it to be cut from a single piece. On upholstery, centre the figure on the seat and inside back, and keep every panel running the same way up.
