Pavilion is one of the geometric stitchworks in the Winslow collection: an ordered, architectural repeat worked in a single thread colour over a linen ground. It is the sort of embroidery that reads as a texture from across the room and reveals its structure as you get closer. At 39 by 44 centimetres the repeat is modest, so it patterns a surface evenly without any one motif taking over, which is what you want from a geometric.

The cloth is 65 per cent linen and 35 per cent viscose, 132 centimetres wide, with a 39 centimetre vertical and 44 centimetre horizontal repeat, and it is specified for curtains and bedspreads. Two colourways: Aqua, a clean blue-green on natural, and Ivory/Red, which is warmer and more traditional in feel. Aqua is the one we reach for in a coastal house; Ivory/Red suits a study or a room with a lot of timber.

We use Pavilion where a floral would be too much: roman blinds in a kitchen or bathroom, a pair of curtains in a boy's bedroom, or the outer border of a bedspread with a plain centre. It pairs naturally with the florals in the same collection, taking the role a stripe would usually play, and it is good on cushions. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

For blinds, keep the repeat centred and level; a geometric shows any drift. Curtains should be lined and, ideally, interlined so the stitch has a firm backing. Allow one repeat per drop for matching and ask your maker to avoid seams through the motif where possible. It is not rated for seating. For a bedspread, quilt along the lines of the pattern rather than across it.
