GP & J Baker | Pentridge

Pentridge is one of the plain-woven textures in the Baker House Textures range: a fine, close weave with a soft, slightly irregular surface rather than a flat, even one, so it catches light differently to a smooth plain. It has no pattern repeat to match, which makes it one of the easiest cloths in the group to specify across a large run of curtain or a set of dining chairs.

The cloth is 46 per cent cotton, 32 per cent viscose, 18 per cent linen and 4 per cent polyester, a mix that gives it more body and a slight sheen compared with a pure linen weave. It is 140 centimetres wide, rated at 30,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Eight colourways: Sand, Parchment, Shell, Blush, Tomato, Teal, Indigo and Leaf, running from pale neutrals through to the two deeper tones, Teal and Indigo.

We use it for upholstery on dining chairs and a small sofa, where the texture reads as quiet and tactile rather than patterned, and it makes clean, simple curtains where a room already has enough pattern elsewhere. Pair a neutral like Sand or Parchment with one of the Ashmore prints, or use Teal or Indigo as the plain foil to a busier floral. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat to match there is little waste, and pattern-matching is not a concern across widths. Line and interline curtains for a proper hang. For upholstery, ask your maker about railroading on a sofa run to avoid a horizontal seam across the back, and keep a cutting for reference since Baker House Textures colours are dyed to a fixed standard rather than to order.
