Poppy Sprig is a small floral from GP & J Baker's House Small Prints collection, the House's line of neat, all-over florals, a single poppy stem printed at a neat 15 by 27 centimetre scale on a viscose-linen ground. It is a sprig print in the true sense, a modest, repeating stem rather than a full bloom, which makes it easy to place across a whole room of curtains and cushions without the pattern ever feeling heavy or asking for a matching plain to calm it down.
The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, a blend that favours drape and a gentle sheen in the printed colour. It is 135 centimetres wide, with a 15 centimetre vertical and 27 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and upholstery. Seven colourways in all; Denim, Green/Blue, Aqua and Blush are the four we turn to most, running from a cool, muted blue to a soft, romantic pink.
We use it for curtains in a bedroom or garden-facing sitting room, where the sprig's modest scale suits the setting, and it covers a chair or window seat well. Pair Denim or Aqua with a cool, contemporary scheme, and Blush where the room wants more softness and warmth. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths so the stem continues cleanly at every seam. Line and interline curtains, since printed colour on a viscose-rich ground fades faster than a woven yarn-dyed cloth; for upholstery, plan the pattern placement carefully with your workroom before the piece is cut.
