Portman is woven largely from recycled yarn, 38 per cent recycled cotton and 32 per cent recycled viscose, and the reclaimed fibre gives the surface a pleasant unevenness that a virgin yarn would not have. The design repeats every 10 centimetres up the cloth and 5 across, a vertical rhythm rather than a motif, so it reads as a textured stripe from a distance. The handle is dry, soft and slightly rustic.

The full blend is 38 per cent recycled cotton, 32 per cent recycled viscose, 16 per cent linen and 14 per cent polyester, woven 135 centimetres wide and tested to 28,000 rubs, which the supplier rates for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Aqua is the colourway, a soft green-blue broken by the paler ground, which keeps it light in a room rather than solid.

We would use Portman on a loose-covered armchair, on dining chair seats, or as curtains in a room where the texture matters more than the colour. It is a natural choice for a scheme built on natural materials, and it sits well with linen, rush, pale oak and unglazed ceramics. Match the 10 centimetre vertical repeat across seams and add one repeat per drop when calculating curtains. At 135 centimetres this is a narrow cloth, so check your width count before ordering. Recycled yarn can vary slightly between batches more than virgin yarn does, so order the whole job at once and ask for it to be cut from a single piece where possible.
