Posy is a small printed floral, tied bunches of flowers arranged in neat rows on a plain cotton ground and drawn with a light hand so the print keeps its softness. It is a traditional idea at a modest scale, the sort of pattern that has been in English houses for two centuries and still works because it never raises its voice. The bunches sit upright in rows, so the design has a direction and needs to be hung the right way up.
One hundred per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 15 centimetres vertically and 13.5 centimetres horizontally. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Blue, Green/Aqua, Green/Red and Ochre/Blue. Blue is the simplest to place, Green/Red has the most traditional feel of the four, and Ochre/Blue is the one to use when a room needs warmth against cool paintwork.
We use it for bedroom and bathroom curtains, for lampshades, and for loose covers on a small armchair or a dressing stool. It makes a good headboard in a guest room where nothing should be too serious, and a good cushion against a larger print. Pair it with a plain linen and a fine stripe. Allow a repeat per drop and match at the seams so the rows of posies stay level across a wide curtain. On a headboard, centre a row on the vertical centre line and work outwards. Cotton takes a press well, but interline full-length curtains so they hang with some weight and the small print does not look thin.
