Potato Print is Kit Kemp's hand-stamped design for GP & J Baker, printed here on a viscose and linen cloth. The shapes are set out in rows and none of them is quite identical, which keeps the repeat from reading as a grid. The cloth itself is soft with a slight dryness to it and falls into narrow folds rather than heavy ones.
It is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen at 137 centimetres wide, with a 43 centimetre vertical and 34 centimetre horizontal repeat, small enough to keep cutting waste low. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Jewel, Chocolate, Green and Sage. Jewel carries the most colour; Sage and Green are the two we would use across a whole window.
This is a good cloth for Roman blinds, where the small repeat sits neatly inside a window reveal, and for loose covers on a small armchair or a bedroom stool. We also use it for lampshades. Put it with a plain linen and one woven stripe and the room is dressed. It is also a sensible cloth for a child's room or a guest bedroom, because the scale is small enough that a patch repair or a shortened hem never shows where the pattern has been cut. With a 34 centimetre horizontal repeat you get four repeats across the width, so a blind up to 130 centimetres wide can be cut without a join. For curtains, centre the pattern on each drop and match at the leading edges. Allow one extra vertical repeat per drop, and if you are covering a stool, railroad nothing, because this design has a clear top and bottom.
