Potato Print is one of Kit Kemp's designs for GP & J Baker, and it keeps the evidence of the hand that made it. Small stamped shapes sit in loose rows, each one a little different from its neighbour, the way a block cut from a potato never prints twice the same. Read from the doorway it behaves as texture; read from a metre away it is clearly drawing. That is a useful combination in a room you pass through rather than sit in.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, 70 centimetres wide, with a 44 centimetre vertical repeat, so the pattern turns over often enough to keep waste down. Six colourways: Jewel, Chocolate, Green, Sage, Plaster and Blue. Jewel is the one that takes over a room and should be used deliberately; Chocolate and Blue give you depth without brightness; Sage and Plaster are quiet enough to hang behind a bed or a wall of pictures.
We tend to use this in the spaces between the main rooms, a cloakroom, a back staircase, the inside of a deep alcove, where a small repeat does more work than a large one. It also suits a child's room or a guest bedroom papered on all four walls, with plain linen curtains and a painted skirting picked from the quietest tone in the paper. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
It is a paste-the-wall paper, which means the lengths go up dry and come off cleanly in one piece later. Cut all your drops before you start and check the match marked on the roll label. At a 2.5 metre ceiling you will get three full drops from a 10 metre roll once the repeat is allowed for, so a 4 metre wall takes two rolls. Order the whole job in one batch and keep the labels.
