GP & J Baker | Pumpkins Cotton

Pumpkins Cotton belongs to GP & J Baker's Originals Brantwood collection, the archive of Victorian naturalist studies named for Ruskin's house on Coniston Water in the Lake District, and takes the pumpkin vine as its subject, drawn at a neat 36 by 34.5 centimetre scale on a pure cotton ground. It sits among the collection's smaller, more garden-like prints rather than its grand botanical studies, easy to place across a run of curtains or a chair without overwhelming the room.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with a 36 centimetre vertical and 34.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 20,000 Martindale rubs, a figure that suits curtains and occasional-use pieces well, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Two colourways, Coral/Green and Green/Blue; Coral/Green is the warmer of the two, Green/Blue the cooler and more contemporary of the pair.

We use it for curtains in a kitchen, garden room or hallway, where the vine motif feels at home, and it covers a lightly used chair or window seat well. The same archive design is also printed onto a softer viscose-linen ground as Pumpkins, should you want more drape for curtains; keep the rest of the room's pattern quiet so the print carries the interest. Allow a full repeat per drop and match the print across widths so the vine continues cleanly at the seams. Line curtains as standard, and interline for a south-facing window to protect the printed colour from fading; at 20,000 rubs, keep upholstered pieces to lighter, occasional use rather than a hard-working family sofa.
