Queen's Damask is the formal figure in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's wallpaper collection drawn from the archive of patterns made for royal residences. It is a proper ogee damask, the foliate fill worked inside the framework, printed so that the figure sits slightly proud of the ground in tone rather than in texture. The repeat is 70 centimetres vertically, which matches the roll width and makes the pattern square and orderly on a wall, the way a damask should be.
Printed on a 100 per cent non-woven ground, 70 centimetres wide, with a 70 centimetre vertical repeat. Five colourways: Royal Green, Aquamarine, Old Red, Marble and Parchment. Marble and Parchment are the tonal options, where the damask reads as a soft texture rather than a pattern, and they are what we specify most often in a drawing room. Royal Green and Old Red are the traditional, stronger choices. Aquamarine is the lightest of the colours.
We use a damask paper in drawing rooms, dining rooms and halls, and above panelling where the framework can line through with the rail. It is also good in a principal bedroom in one of the tonal colourways. Hang pictures on it without worry, because the regular repeat gives a frame something to sit against. Keep curtains plain or in a small check. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and hang dry. A damask has to be set out: find the centre of the main wall or the chimney breast, strike a plumb line and work outwards so the figure is centred where it will be noticed. Allow one full 70 centimetre repeat per drop. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high takes six drops, which is three rolls at the usual 10 metre length.
