GP & J Baker | Ring Road

Ring Road is one of Kit Kemp's graphic designs for GP & J Baker, with concentric drawn rings laid out across a cotton and linen ground. The cloth has more body than the viscose prints in the collection and a slightly rough face, which suits the loose, hand-drawn line. It hangs with weight and holds a pleat. The rings are drawn rather than compass-struck, so they wobble and overlap, and the design reads as something made by hand at full size rather than scaled up from a small sketch.

Composition is 48 per cent cotton, 44 per cent linen and 8 per cent polyester, 130 centimetres wide, with a 39 centimetre vertical and 65 centimetre horizontal repeat, exactly half the cloth width. GP & J Baker list it for curtains and bedspreads. Two colourways: Jewel, which runs several strong colours through the rings, and Sage, which keeps the whole thing to one family and is much the quieter of the pair.

We would use this for full-length curtains in a sitting room, for a bedspread or throw over a plain bed, and for cushions made up square so a whole ring shows. It is not listed for upholstery, so keep it off seat pads. Put it with a plain linen and a small woven texture. In Sage it will sit under a strong wall colour without argument; in Jewel it should be the only pattern in the room. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

The 65 centimetre horizontal repeat sits at half the width, so two full repeats fall across every drop and seams can be planned to land between rings. Add one 39 centimetre repeat per drop for matching. Linen-rich cloths move with humidity, so hang the curtains for seven to ten days before the hems are finished.
