Roar Stitch is a Kit Kemp design of big cats drawn with an embroidered, stitched-line quality and set in a repeating pattern across the paper. The stitch effect is printed, but it gives the animals the character of a crewel-work hanging, and the 45 centimetre repeat makes them large enough to have real presence on a wall. It is a paper with a sense of humour, which is rarer than it should be. The cats are drawn with affection, and the stitched line keeps them from becoming cartoonish.
It is a non-woven, paste-the-wall paper on a standard 10 metre by 52 centimetre roll, with a 45 centimetre vertical repeat. Three colourways: Jewel, Green and Blue/Green. Jewel is the multicoloured version and the boldest; Green and Blue/Green are quieter two-tone readings that are easier to live with on four walls and in a room with a lot else going on.
We use it in a child's bedroom, a playroom, a cloakroom or a snug, and on one wall of a study where a client wants something less expected. It pairs with Cubby plain and with plain linens in a colour from the design. In a hallway it makes a good backdrop for a run of pictures, and in a boot room it earns its keep by hiding marks. It is not a paper for a formal drawing room, and it does not pretend to be. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and hang the drops dry; check the match on the label and allow a full 45 centimetre repeat per drop. A 3 metre wall at 2.4 metres high takes about 2 rolls. Keep to one batch across the room. Order a spare roll for repairs.
