Robina's Dinner Party puts one of Kit Kemp's drawn scenes for GP & J Baker onto cloth: a laid table, its guests and all the clutter of a good evening. On a viscose and linen ground the line stays fine and the colour sits flat, so the scene reads as drawing rather than print. The cloth has a soft, dry handle and drapes without stiffness. There is a lot to look at, so it wants a window or a piece of furniture where people will be close enough to find the detail rather than a wall seen only in passing.
Composition is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 67 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat, very close to a half-width repeat, so the design mirrors neatly across a pair of curtains. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Jewel, Cocoa, Green, Blue and Teal. Cocoa is the warmest; Blue and Teal the coolest and the easiest in a bright room.
Curtains in a dining room are the obvious use, and the one we would take first. After that, a pair of large cushions on a plain sofa, or the seat and back of a small painted chair. Keep everything near it plain. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
Because the horizontal repeat is almost exactly half the cloth width, you can cut a pair of curtains so the scene falls the same way on both sides. Tell your maker to plan the drops together rather than separately, add one vertical repeat per drop for matching, and place the fullest part of the drawing at eye level rather than letting the hem cut through it.
