Robina's Dinner Party is one of the drawn, figurative designs Kit Kemp has made for GP & J Baker: a table, its guests and everything on it, set into a repeat that climbs the wall at 70 centimetres. It is a paper people talk about, which is exactly what you want in a dining room, and the drawing is loose enough that it never turns fussy. The line wavers around the glasses and the plates in the way a drawn design does and a redrawn one does not, which is why the scene stays warm at close range.
It is printed on a 100 per cent non-woven ground, 70 centimetres wide, with a 70 centimetre vertical repeat. Six colourways: Jewel, Cocoa, Green, Blue, Teal and Sage. Jewel puts the most colour into the scene; Cocoa reads as a warm sepia and suits a candlelit room; Green, Blue, Teal and Sage each take the drawing down to two or three tones, which is the version we would use if the room already has pattern in it.
Dining rooms first, then a small sitting room or a hall with good height. We would hang it on all four walls rather than one, keep the joinery painted in a single flat colour taken from the paper, and dress the windows in an unlined plain so the drawing stays the only event. Sold by the roll; order a sample before committing to a full room.
Paste the wall and work in roll order so the drawing carries round the corners. With a 70 centimetre repeat each drop needs rounding up to the next full repeat, which at a 2.5 metre ceiling gives three drops from a 10 metre roll and two rolls for a 4 metre wall. Check the match on the label, and buy the whole room in one batch.
