GP & J Baker | Royal Court

Royal Court is the design the collection takes its name from, drawn from GP & J Baker's archive of patterns made for royal residences. It is a mid-scale floral trail printed on a viscose and linen ground, with the stems worked in one colour and the heads in a second, which is what gives the five colourways their two-tone character. The repeat is 20 centimetres vertically by 34.25 horizontally, so the trail moves across the cloth rather than up it, and it stays busy enough to disguise a seam.

The cloth is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, 137 centimetres wide, with a 20 centimetre vertical and 34.25 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Five colourways: Red/Green, Old Blue, Red, Aqua and Pink/Green. Old Blue and Aqua are the calm pair. Red and Red/Green are the strongest and best in a room with dark joinery. Pink/Green is the softest and the one we would choose for a bedroom.

This is a good all-round furnishing print. We use it for curtains with a pencil-pleat or a soft gathered heading, on a slipper chair, and on a bed valance with a plain quilt over it. It will also take a Roman blind well because the horizontal movement of the trail suits a flat panel. Pair it with a plain linen in the ground colour and one check. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow one repeat per drop, and with a 34.25 centimetre horizontal repeat check the cutting width before you order for a wide window, because part widths waste quickly. On loose covers, keep the trail running up the inside back and down the outside back in the same direction; the design is not reversible and it shows if a panel is turned.
