Royal Garden Velvet is part of GP & J Baker's collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, drawing its motif from the gardens of Britain's royal palaces and setting it on a soft, viscose-rich velvet ground. The design is set out in a 64 by 69 centimetre repeat, giving the garden motif real presence, with the depth and richness that only a pile fabric can bring to a floral print.
The cloth is 55 per cent viscose and 45 per cent cotton, and it is 137 centimetres wide, with a 64 centimetre vertical and 69 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Quartz, a pale, soft pink; Sapphire, a rich single blue; Jewel, a multi-toned combination in deep, saturated colours; and Amber/Jade, pairing a warm gold with a cooling green.
We use it for a chair or a section of a sofa where a plush, patterned velvet can be the focal point of a room, and for curtains in a formal room that can carry a design with real palace pedigree. Sapphire or Jewel suit a richer, more traditional scheme; Quartz is the easier, paler choice for a softer room. It pairs naturally with Royal Garden Linen, the printed companion in the same design, on a cushion or a lighter chair. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the pile and colour together in your own light.
Allow one full repeat per drop and match carefully across widths so the garden motif aligns at the seams. For upholstery, ask your maker about railroading on a wide sofa and about pile direction, since a printed velvet should be cut with the pile running consistently. Dry clean only; do not wash, bleach or iron it.
