GP & J Baker | Royal Maze

Royal Court is GP & J Baker's collection drawn from the company's archive of designs made for royal residences, and Royal Maze is the geometric in it: an interlacing knot-garden figure printed on a viscose and linen ground. The cloth has a soft, slightly dry handle with a faint slub from the linen, and it takes the print crisply without the hard surface you get on a cotton sateen. The figure is compact, 30 centimetres vertically by 34.25 horizontally, so it reads as a worked texture from across a room and only shows its geometry close to.

Composition is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen, woven 137 centimetres wide, with a 30 centimetre vertical and 34.25 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Royal Green, Royal Blue, Sage and Ochre. Royal Green and Royal Blue are the deep, saturated pair and carry a room on their own. Sage is the quiet one and the easiest to use over a large area. Ochre is the warm choice and the one we would put in a north-facing room.

We use this on a headboard and a pair of bedside stools, or as the seat of a dining chair where the tight repeat suits a small panel. It also makes good curtains in a study, lined and interlined so the linen content hangs properly. Pair it with a plain velvet or a slubby linen in the ground colour and keep the third fabric to a stripe. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

For upholstery, centre the figure on the seat and on the inside back and mark the centre line on the frame before you cut. Allow a full repeat per cut on a chair and half a metre extra per curtain drop for matching. With a 34.25 centimetre horizontal repeat you lose width across a wide pair, so measure first.
