Royal Maze is the geometric in Royal Court, GP & J Baker's wallpaper collection drawn from the archive of designs made for royal residences. It is an interlacing knot-garden figure, the sort of thing that was set out in box hedging and then copied onto paper and cloth, and it has been drawn by hand rather than ruled, so the lines have a little give in them. The repeat is 31 centimetres vertically, which keeps the geometry legible without turning a wall into a grid.
The ground is 100 per cent non-woven, printed 70 centimetres wide, with a 31 centimetre vertical repeat. Four colourways: Royal Green, Royal Blue, Sage and Ochre. Royal Green and Royal Blue are the saturated pair and will carry a room on their own. Sage is the quiet one and the safest choice for a large area or an open-plan space. Ochre is the warm option, and it is the one we would use in a hall that gets very little direct light.
We use a paper like this in halls, studies and dining rooms, and above panelling where the horizontal rail gives the geometry something to sit on. It also works in a cloakroom, where a strong repeat in a small space is no bad thing. Pair it with plain painted joinery in the ground colour and keep any fabric in the room solid. Paste the wall and hang the lengths dry so they can be slid into the match. A geometric is unforgiving of an out-of-plumb wall, so strike a plumb line and set the first drop to it rather than to the corner. Allow one repeat per drop. A four metre wall at 2.6 metres high takes six drops at this width, which is two rolls at the usual 10 metre length.
