GP & J Baker | Runaway

Runaway is one of the livelier stripes Kit Kemp has drawn for GP & J Baker, woven in cotton so the bands have body and a matt surface. The stripe breaks and restarts rather than running continuously, which gives a 19 centimetre vertical repeat and keeps the cloth from looking like ticking. It has a clean, dry handle and a crisp fold. The breaks in the bands are irregular rather than measured, which is what keeps a woven stripe of this weight from looking like mattress ticking.

It is 100 per cent cotton, 136 centimetres wide, with a 19 centimetre vertical and 34 centimetre horizontal repeat. GP & J Baker list it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Coral/Indigo, Indigo/Red and Coral/Green. All three pair a warm colour with a cool one, and all three are strong, so this is a cloth you choose first and build the rest of the scheme around.

Curtains in a bedroom or a child's room, loose covers on a small armchair, and cushions are where we use cotton stripes like this. It also makes a good blind in a kitchen window where you want colour but not pattern in the usual sense. Two of the three colourways work well together in the same room, one on the curtains and one on a chair, provided the rest of the scheme is plain. The 34 centimetre horizontal repeat gives four repeats across the width, so a blind up to 130 centimetres cuts without a join and curtain seams can be dropped into the quietest band. Allow one 19 centimetre repeat per drop. Cotton will shrink slightly on cleaning, so ask for deep hems that can be let down later.
