GP & J Baker | Ruskin Cotton

Ruskin Cotton is named directly for John Ruskin, whose house Brantwood gives GP & J Baker's Originals Brantwood collection its name, and this is one of the archive's more substantial botanical prints, drawn at 43 by 69 centimetres on a pure cotton ground. Where some of the collection's small prints read as texture, Ruskin has enough scale to be read as a proper botanical study across a curtain or a chair, much as the naturalist's own drawings would have been studied on a page.

The cloth is 100 per cent cotton, 138 centimetres wide, with a 43 centimetre vertical and 69 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker tested it to 30,000 Martindale rubs, which is rated for upholstery, specifying it for curtains and upholstery. Two colourways, Green and Teal; Green reads as the more grounded, archive-appropriate choice, Teal the cooler, more contemporary one for a plainer room.

We use it for a pair of curtains in a study or library, where the Ruskin name and the naturalist subject both earn their place, and at 30,000 rubs it upholsters confidently on a chair or a sofa in ordinary use. It pairs well with Ruskin Velvet in the same design for cushions or a second chair, or with a plain linen in one of its two tones. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Allow a full 69 centimetre horizontal repeat when planning quantities, and match the print across widths so the pattern continues cleanly at the seams. Line curtains as standard; for upholstery, plan the pattern placement with your workroom before cutting so it falls well on the main panels of the finished piece.
