GP & J Baker | Rye

Rye is a Portobello print with rayon in the blend alongside linen, giving it a soft sheen and a fluid drape. At 80 by 64 centimetres it has the largest repeat in the collection's printed designs, a scale that wants a proper length of curtain to show its full pattern rather than a short one, and the pale Parchment ground keeps the large motif from feeling heavy in a smaller room than its scale might suggest.

Composition is 67 per cent linen and 33 per cent rayon. It is 128 centimetres wide, with an 80 centimetre vertical and 64 centimetre horizontal repeat, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains. There is one colourway, Parchment, a warm, pale neutral.

We use Rye for full-length curtains in a sitting room or principal bedroom, where the large repeat has the space it needs, and the parchment ground keeps the room feeling light rather than heavy. It also makes a striking single-panel headboard, and a pair of full-length curtains either side of a French window shows the whole repeat off properly. A bedspread cut from Rye gives a guest room real presence without needing another pattern in the scheme. Pair it with a plain linen in a soft green or blue. With an 80 centimetre repeat, allow a full extra repeat per drop when calculating quantities and plan the layout so the pattern sits well at the leading edge. Line and interline curtains for a good fall and to protect the print from strong sun.
