GP & J Baker | Sampul

Sampul belongs to East To West, GP & J Baker's collection of globally inspired prints, and its name recalls the historic Silk Road trading post of the same name, a fitting reference for a design with roots in Central Asian pattern-making. It is set out in a generous 72 by 68.5 centimetre repeat on a soft cotton-viscose ground, close to square, giving it a balanced, all-over presence.

The cloth is 45 per cent cotton and 55 per cent viscose, and it is 137 centimetres wide, with a 72 centimetre vertical and 68.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. It is rated at 50,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery as well as curtains. GP & J Baker specify it for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. There is one colourway, Peacock, a rich, deep teal that gives the design real depth.

We use it for curtains in a room that wants a design with genuine history behind it, and the Martindale rating means it also covers a chair or a section of a sofa. Peacock is confident enough to anchor a room on its own, and it pairs well with a plain linen or velvet in a matching teal, or with one of the paler East To West prints for contrast. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see the scale and colour in your own light.

Allow one full repeat per drop and match carefully across widths so the motif aligns at the seams. Line and interline curtains, and press from the reverse to protect the print. For upholstery, ask your maker about railroading and centring the motif on a large panel such as a sofa back, and check pattern placement before cutting.
