Saxon is the most complex blend in GP & J Baker's Burford Weaves II collection, and you can feel it, because six fibres worked into one cloth give a face with several different lights in it. The structure moves on a 16 centimetre vertical repeat, so the surface has a slow, broken texture rather than a flat one. The handle is soft, dense and slightly woolly.
Composition is 44 per cent viscose, 21 per cent linen, 13 per cent polyester, 13 per cent cotton, 6 per cent wool and 3 per cent nylon, woven 137 centimetres wide, with a 16 centimetre vertical and 2.5 centimetre horizontal repeat. Abrasion is tested at 30,000 rubs on the Martindale scale. Seven colourways: Parchment, Coral, Red, Blue, Green, Ochre and Dove, with Parchment and Dove the neutrals and the rest clear single colours.
This is an upholstery cloth before it is anything else. We would put it on a sofa or a deep armchair, on a window seat that gets daily use, and on dining chairs in a room where a plain would show every mark. It also makes a good heavy curtain in a cold room. In Parchment or Dove it behaves as a textured neutral and will take a patterned cushion without argument; the coloured versions are better used on a single piece. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
The 16 centimetre vertical repeat is small but real, so a careful upholsterer will match it across the seat and inside back of a large chair. Wool in the blend means the cloth will felt slightly if it is over-steamed, so press from the reverse and use a cloth. For curtains, allow one repeat per drop and interline for weight.
