Sonning is the one Essential Weaves design in this range with wool in the blend, alongside viscose, polyester, linen and a little cotton, which gives it a slightly heavier, more substantial hand than its stablemates. There is no meaningful repeat, and the single Teal/Spice colourway combines two tones in one yarn rather than presenting them as a pattern, so the cloth reads as a single complex colour rather than two competing ones, closer to a tweed than a house plain.

Composition is 37 per cent viscose, 37 per cent wool, 22 per cent polyester, 3 per cent linen and 1 per cent cotton. It is 140 centimetres wide, tested to 40,000 rubs on the Martindale, which is comfortably rated for upholstery, and GP & J Baker specify it for curtains and both loose and fixed upholstery. There is one colourway, Teal/Spice, a warm-cool combination.

We use Sonning on a sofa or armchair where a heavier, wool-rich hand is wanted, and it works equally well as curtains in a room that wants some weight in the fall of the cloth. The two-tone colourway is easy to pair, since it already contains both a warm and a cool note, and a window seat in Sonning reads as a genuinely tailored, considered choice rather than a plain filler fabric. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

At 40,000 rubs this is a genuinely hard-wearing upholstery weight. The wool content gives it more body than the purely cellulosic weaves in the range, so it drapes with slightly more structure as a curtain. There is no pattern to match; order on drop and width, and line curtains as usual for a good, weighted fall.
